Top 10 Xbox Games

by Eric Qualls
The Xbox has a lot of great games, but here are our picks for the ten best.

1) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Knights of the Old Republic is not only the best game on Xbox, it is one of the best RPGs on any system. The pseudo real-time / turn based gameplay flows at a great pace that always keeps you in the game so you feel like you are in control rather than just watching like in, say, Final Fantasy. Couple this great gameplay with the Star Wars universe and you have an exceptional game. KOTOR is great and a must have in any Xbox collection.

2) Halo 2

Halo 2 is baby steps rather than the giant leap forward that the hype would of had you believe, but it is still a great game that is one of the best titles on the Xbox. Great controls, great graphics, amazing multiplayer, and a fun single player mode all add up to a pretty appealing package.

3) Jet Set Radio Future

Jet Set Radio Future doesn’t get nearly the credit it deserves. It is the sequel to a somewhat popular Dreamcast game, but it takes everything Jet Grind Radio did on the Dreamcast and multiplies it by ten on the fun scale. Skating around huge urban environments and graffito-tagging everything in sight is great fun, and Jet Set Radio Future does it with amazing cel-shaded graphics and a great style. The music is also simply outstanding.

4) Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

The Oddworld series has always been known for its collection of strange characters, twisted sense of humor, and above everything else the wonderfully refined and unique gameplay found in each of the games. Now in Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, the gameplay changes yet again and the result is a mix of third-person action and first-person shooting that is one of the smoothest and most satisfying experiences to come out in quite a while.

5) Beyond Good & Evil

One of the most underrated games of 2003, Beyond Good & Evil combines several different types of gameplay into one giant funfest. Beyond Good & Evil is a third-person hack and slash game, a stealth game, a racing game, and on top of all of this you are constantly taking photographs. The story is also better than just about anything else out there. This is another game that can be purchased for relatively little money these days and it is definitely worth it.

6) Grand Theft Auto Double Pack

The Grand Theft Auto Double Pack contains special versions of Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto Vice City that have been pimped out for the Xbox. GTA 3 and Vice City are the games that started the current trend of do anything, go anywhere games that are currently flooding the market, and surprisingly enough they are still the best the genre has to offer. Now, these games aren’t exactly family friendly, so if you have little ones in the house you might want to skip it.

7) Dead or Alive 3

Dead or Alive 3 launched with the Xbox and it is still one of the best looking games on the system. The series is known more for the bouncing breasts of its female characters, but the fighting engine underneath all of the fan service is actually really deep and very satisfying to learn.

8) Project Gotham Racing 2

Project Gotham Racing was a fun little racer when it was released, but it couldn’t really stack up to other games in the genre. Project Gotham Racing 2 changes all of that by adding more cars, more tracks, Xbox LIVE play, and improved gameplay that does a better job of appealing to the masses than the original did. This is an arcade racer where it is just as important to race with style as it is to actually win the race.

9) Madden NFL 2005

Year after year, one of the best selling games is Madden NFL football. The Xbox versions of these games typically look the best, but up until now online play was exclusive to the PS2. With Madden 2005, you can play online with your friends via Xbox LIVE complete with voice chat, leagues, tournaments, and all of the other goodies. Now the best football game got better thanks to Xbox LIVE.

10) Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Morrowind is possibly the biggest game ever made. The map is literally hundreds of square miles in size and there are thousands of people to talk to. You can do pretty much anything you want and nearly everything in the game is interactive. The main storyline is rather lengthy, but when you factor in all of the side missions and exploration you have to do, Morrowind can provide new and interesting gameplay experiences for hundreds of hours.
